Key details: why tea fights the machine
By the end of this page you will understand the six details that decide whether a tea shot comes out sweet, bitter, watery, or stuck. Every one of them traces back to one fact: tea leaves are not coffee grounds.
1. Tea leaves absorb water and swell; coffee grounds do not
Section titled “1. Tea leaves absorb water and swell; coffee grounds do not”This is the root of everything. Coffee beans are dry, dense, and (once ground) mostly stay where you put them. Tea leaves are dried plant material that rehydrates eagerly, swelling to several times their dry volume.
The consequences, observed by people who actually tried it:
- Finely powdered tea packed in the portafilter does not work. It absorbs water, expands, and the shot stalls (Sift & Simmer).
- Whole leaf works poorly the other way — water finds channels around the leaves and you get a weak, watery extraction that tastes like an ordinary steep (Sift & Simmer).
- Coarse-ground or broken leaf works. The water can penetrate the pieces without them swelling into a barrier (Sift & Simmer).
So particle size is the first dial. Whole leaf → break it up coarsely. Powder → do not use it (this includes matcha, and it is why matcha in an espresso machine is a known failure mode).
2. Heat: the machine is a black-tea machine
Section titled “2. Heat: the machine is a black-tea machine”Your espresso machine is set for coffee: 90–96 °C (195–205 °F) (BrewBase). The teas that want that heat are exactly the robust ones — black, roasted oolong, pu-erh, rooibos, herbs. The teas that do not — green and white, which want 70–85 °C — get scorched. The off-taste is not “strong tea”; it is hydrogen-sulfide compounds that form when delicate leaves are cooked too hot, described accurately as “overcooked vegetable” flavor (Red Blossom Tea).
If your machine has PID control, 88–90 °C is a good compromise for dark oolong; heat-exchanger machines get a cooling flush (BrewBase).
3. Tamping: light, or not at all

- Light tamping compacts the leaf bed enough to prevent channeling (Sift & Simmer).
- Hard tamping is a disaster: the leaves swell into an impenetrable barrier, the overpressure valve trips, and water sprays out of the group head (BrewBase).
The synthesis: level the leaves with your fingers or the tamper’s weight, and do not push. You are not building a coffee puck — you are arranging leaves so water passes through them evenly.
4. Headroom: the leaves grow into the shower screen
Section titled “4. Headroom: the leaves grow into the shower screen”Because tea swells, a basket filled to the brim ends up pressing into the shower screen mid-shot — choked extraction and a messy basket to clean. Leave a third of the basket empty (BrewBase).
5. Dose, time, yield — the starting numbers

The first 20–30 seconds of extraction are the sweet part. A second shot of the same leaves pulls out the bitter tannins — which is useful: for a full, rounded flavor, use the first shot plus a bit of the second; for a sweet tea, stop after the first (Sift & Simmer).
About the foam: a fresh tea shot can show a thin crema-like foam, but it is not coffee crema. Coffee crema is CO₂ released by the beans; tea has no such gas, so do not expect the thick golden layer — the tea version is a light foam at best (Sift & Simmer).
6. Tea selection: the table

Tea bags work too — empty the bag’s contents into the basket (Sift & Simmer). Fannings extract fast, so shorten the shot.
7. Cleaning: tea oils do not leave
Section titled “7. Cleaning: tea oils do not leave”Tea oils and tannins are persistent. Pull a tea shot, then tomorrow’s coffee will taste like bergamot unless you:
- purge the group head with plain water immediately after the tea shot,
- backflush with espresso-machine detergent after a session — plain water backflushes do not shift the tea film,
- soak the basket in warm water + detergent for ~15 minutes now and then, and inspect the holes against light (BrewBase).
This is also the answer to “does tea damage my machine?”: no, as long as you clean it. The pump handles tea leaves easily — they offer less resistance than coffee (BrewBase).
